Rating: - A comfortable, fun read - cover to cover
I subscribe to Maxim, Stuff, FHM, and gear. Maxim is Maxim. Everyone has seen this mag - with it's punchy quips, biting wit, eye-candy galore, and take-nothing-seriously attitude, Maxim is a mag you can pick up at any time and find a juicy morsel to sink your teeth into. Stuff is much of the same - coming from the same publisher, Stuff is almost the same magazine as Maxim, but with different girls, more "Stuff" (or gear) to look at, and it isn't *quite* as 'in-your-face'. FHM is becoming more and more like Maxim with every issue - this is not a bad thing, but I sort of liked the old brit version better. Now - on to gear. gear lets you take your own pace with the mag. The reviews in this mag are just that - reviews -- not ratings. Yes, they have lists in gear, but they are actually tastefully done. The physical dimensions of gear leave a bit larger of a footprint - I love this. the pages are not jam-packed with quips and funny pictures - there is enough whitespace on each page to allow you to breathe. gear is not about "the most magazine for your buck." gear is about quality - quality of the articles (I just can't call the writing in this mag 'copy' - it is too good) quality of choices - more interesting women, more tasteful photos, interesting views on music, clothing, and gadgetry. If anything, gear is understated. As I said before, I subscribe to all four of these magazines, and I read all of them. Maxim, Stuff, and FHM are the Larry, Moe, And Curly of the bunch - A barrel of laughs, and very entertaining. gear is the Ben Stiller of the four - extremely witty, good fashion sense, understated, and somewhat dark around the edges.
Rating: - For readers only
MAGAZINE REVIEW:Long articles; not enough pictures of women; not in the same league as "Maxim", "Stuff", or "FHM". I like magazines that have short articles. "gear" has long articles; no way am I going to read every one of them. The magazine is thin, but at the same time, large; what I mean is, it's not very thick, but its width is larger than most magazines--out of all the magazines I have in my collection, "gear" sticks out at the side the most! I only recommed "gear" for people who really likes to read. If not, stay away from the magazine.
Rating: - Gear. Hmmm. Not so good.
Gear - a perfect magazine if you are into recycled Spin magazine articles from the 1980s and 90s. Very occassionally, some brilliance does shine through - but more often than not, the dead layout, odd editing, poor photography and obscure cover stars (Amanda Marcum, anyone?) leaves the reader feeling empty. An added bonus - the magazine is so thin it can double as dental floss! Save your time and some trees - skip Gear for other titles like FHM or Maxim.
