Average Rating: Rating: - Not focused on food Gourmet focuses more on travel, it seems, than on food itself. I find a lot of extraneous material in this magazine which is out of reach for me; it seems targeted toward a jet set that can afford to travel and stay at top hotels and eat at top restaurants. Food seems incidental. I would recommend Bon Appetit over Gourmet for any serious cook. Gourmet seems to be more about tasting other people's food and dreaming about it rather than getting serious about cooking it yourself. A lot of pictures but not a lot of substance. Definitely a coffee-table magazine. Rating: - gourmet living I see that a lot of people are disappointed in the changes Gourmet magazine has made. I really enjoy Gourmet's broader focus on the enjoyment of food (cooked at home, or enjoyed out). My favorite feature is Road Food - which focuses on down-home (often roadside) food. I guess I would suggest this magazine to anyone who loves all kinds of food experiences, but if you are looking mainly for a recipe and cooking technique magazine, this may not be a good choice as your only subscription. Rating: - Inspired to experiment I've always enjoyed this magazine, but I've come to be devoted to it since the new editor took over. It celebrates a wide range of cooking styles, gives helpful advice with the recipes, and takes you to other parts of the country and the world to learn about food. What really turned me on recently was an article on the art of the dumpling. The author included a number of recipes, one of which I tried--matzo balls made with the addition of ground almonds. Oh, boy, was it great. Gourmet will give you a lot of inspiration for giving meals variety and will encourage you to try new foods and new ways of preparing food.
