Described by the publisher as "a national magazine edited to address current issues, ideas and events...domestic, and international news analysis, with in depth features, critics and humorous observations on politics and business, culture and the arts, education, style, sports and literature", that certainly describes what The New Yorker does, but not what it is...In our opinion, The New Yorker is second only - barely - to The Atlantic Monthly in terms of scope of reporting, quality of writing and relevance of material. In fact, both magazines share a similar format and layout. The New Yorker is essential if you live in New York City, visit frequently or have a vested interest. "Goings On" is perhaps the best collection of reviews and listings available for all things cultural (high and low) in the City. For those who never step foot in the Empire State, never mind Gotham itself, you can skip right to "Talk of the Town". In this case, the "town" in question is the great global village, Planet Earth. The coverage starts off fast and furious...the first entries contain a few hundred words. Each subsequent story is given more space as the complexity of the stories themselves deepen. This may be one of the finest editorial and layout conventions used anywhere in American print.
Rating: - So Good
There really is very little to say about the New Yorker; it is simply so good. I currently subscribe to this magazine and it makes me think and exposes me to thought and information that I am not otherwise aware of. I constantly recognize elsewhere the names of people whose photographs, drawings, or writings I see in the New Yorker.
When I ride the bus to work every day, I can get through the whole magazine in a week. When I can't get through the whole magazine in a week, I'll flip through and read the 'Shouts and Murmurs' section and [blush] just look at the cartoons. I find my subscription to the New Yorker incredibly valuable even if I don't get a chance to read every copy that comes to my mailbox.
Rating: - Worth the Money
I have subscribed to several magazines over the years and "The New Yorker" continues to be the most consistently satisfying one I receive. I thoroughly enjoy the excellent articles, and always read each issue from cover to cover. The depth and breadth of the reportage is essentially unequaled in magazine journalism. A liberal slant generally exists in the political writing, and while I certainly weary of that and don't find it justifiable, it's not, by any means, a characteristic unique to "The New Yorker".Someone once made the comment that reading "The New Yorker" can make you feel smart without doing anything. There is so much to learn; I find it a great companion to my college history, English, and art courses. I hope the quality of this magazine continues. If so, I will be a subscriber for a long time.
