Rating: - I travel as much as I would like so.....
I travel vicariously through National Geographic Adventure. A great magazine to sit, read and dream of an adventure.
Rating: - The only magazine I subscribe to - for good reason!
I've looked at Climbing, Rock and Ice, Backpacker, etc. and found them all lacking. Sure they have some pretty pictures, but they only really report what's happening or give you an idea of someplace you might like to go (for me anyway, an avid rock climber and outdoorsman). Adventure does all that, pretty pictures (it is a National Geograpic publication after all), great ideas on where to go (although admittedly less of them than he other mags), and cool new gear (and a section on the personal gear of a specific outdoors sports professional). Basically everything a good magazine should do. But it's what they do in addition that sets NGA apart. True to their title, each article takes you on an adventure. The other mags may report on an area, but with Adventure the articles are so well written that reading them allows easy escape to a rafting trip down the Grand Canyon, or a search for a long lost uncle in the backcountry of Bolivia. It really gives you a sense of adventure, and I love it. If that's what you're looking for - a chance to escape to several exotic locals for a true adventure - then this is the magazine for you.
Rating: - Great mag!
I've been subscribing to NGA for nearly two years and it is great value for money. Has a good mix of articles, from trip reports to the occasional detour into social issues (a heartrending report of medical AIDS workers in Africa), and international politics (Sebastian Junger's chilling account of the Northern Alliance, published well before 9/11). The destination reports are always well researched and illustrated and make you want to get out there and do it!
